In a step-by-step process, Marvin Minsky constructs a model of human intelligence which is built up from the interactions of simple parts called Agents, which are themselves mindless. He describes the postulated interactions as constituting a "society of mind", hence the title... Minsky first started developing the theory with Seymour Papert in the early 1970s. Minsky said that the biggest source of ideas about the theory came from his work in trying to create a machine that uses a robotic arm, a video camera, and a computer to build with children's blocks. Erik Hoel: I'm a complexitarian: only eat things below a certain neural complexity... octopus (is above the bar)... But of course being a complexitarian is just a stand-in. Ideally, we'd all be unconscioustarians... but without a theory of consciousness we can't even decide what to ethically eat. (more)

Sociology is the scientific study of human society that focuses on society, human social behavior, patterns of social relationships, social interaction, and aspects of culture associated with everyday life.[1][2][3] The term sociology was coined in the late 18th century to describe the scientific study of society.[4] Regarded as a part of both the social sciences and humanities, sociology uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis[5]: 3–5  to develop a body of knowledge about social order and social change.[5]: 32–40  Sociological subject matter ranges from micro-level analyses of individual interaction and agency to macro-level analyses of social systems and social structure. Applied sociological research may be directed toward social policy and welfare, whereas theoretical approaches may focus on the understanding of social processes and phenomenological method. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sociology

Erik Hoel: Why we stopped making Einsteins. (With published responses following.) I think the most depressing fact about humanity is that during the 2000s most of the world was handed essentially free access to the entirety of knowledge (WorldWideWeb) and that didn’t trigger a golden age. (more)
